Quick verdict
Hunter.io is the pragmatic choice when you already have a CRM and a sending tool and simply need reliable email addresses. It is narrower than Apollo or Cognism by design, and that focus shows in verification quality and API reliability. If you want prospecting, sequencing and dialling in one place, this is not that product.
- Choose it if
- You need to find and verify work email addresses at a known domain, and you want a clean API to wire into existing systems.
- Skip it if
- You need phone numbers, intent data or built-in sequencing — Hunter deliberately does not cover those.

What Hunter.io does
Hunter.io finds email addresses associated with a domain and verifies whether an address is likely to accept mail. Its Domain Search returns known addresses at a company along with a confidence score and the public sources where the pattern was observed.
Email Verifier is the other half of the product and arguably the more valuable one. It performs syntax, domain, MX and mailbox-level checks to reduce bounce rate before a campaign runs — which matters because a high bounce rate damages sending reputation well beyond the individual campaign.
A lightweight Campaigns feature exists for basic cold email sequences, but it is not a substitute for a dedicated sending platform at volume.
Core capabilities
- Domain Search returning known addresses and email patterns for a company
- Email Finder for a specific person at a known domain
- Email Verifier with deliverability confidence scoring
- Bulk processing via CSV upload
- Well-documented REST API with generous rate limits
- Chrome extension for on-page email discovery
- Basic cold email campaign sending
Who it suits
Hunter fits technical teams and agencies that want an email data layer they can call programmatically, and who already have their own outreach infrastructure.
It also suits anyone whose main problem is bounce rate rather than list size — the verifier alone justifies the subscription for teams sending meaningful volume.
It is not a fit for a sales team wanting a single platform to prospect, sequence and call from.
How pricing works
Hunter uses credit-based monthly tiers, where searches and verifications draw from separate allowances. Higher tiers increase both allowances and raise API rate limits. A free tier provides a small monthly allowance, adequate for occasional use or for testing API integration. Because pricing is driven by volume rather than seats, small teams doing high volume pay more than large teams doing little — the opposite of per-seat tools, and worth modelling before committing.
We do not publish specific figures. SaaS pricing changes frequently and varies by region, contract length and seat count. For current rates, check the vendor’s own pricing page: Hunter.io pricing.
Trade-offs
Drawn from vendor documentation and recurring themes in public user feedback on G2, Capterra and Trustpilot. These are editorial observations, not our own usage claims.
Strengths
- Verification quality is consistently well regarded and reduces bounce rates materially
- Clean, stable, well-documented API suited to automation
- Confidence scoring and source attribution make results auditable
- Free tier sufficient for genuine evaluation
- Simple, predictable product with little feature bloat
Limitations
- No phone numbers, intent data or firmographic filtering
- Cannot build prospect lists from scratch — you need target domains first
- Built-in campaign tool is basic compared with dedicated senders
- Credit model penalises small teams doing high volume
- Catch-all domains return uncertain results, as with every verifier
Alternatives to consider
| Alternative | Consider it when |
|---|---|
| Apollo.io | You want database, enrichment and sequencing in one subscription |
| Seamless.AI | You need to build lists from scratch rather than enrich known domains |
| Cognism | You need phone-verified European contact data |
Frequently asked questions
Does Hunter.io find personal email addresses?
No. Hunter focuses on business email addresses associated with company domains. Personal addresses are outside its scope and would carry very different privacy obligations.
How accurate is the Email Verifier?
Verification is generally well regarded, but no verifier can be certain about catch-all domains, which accept all mail at the server regardless of whether the mailbox exists. Hunter marks these as uncertain rather than guessing, which is the honest behaviour.
Can I use Hunter for cold outreach legally?
Legality depends on jurisdiction. B2B cold email is treated differently under GDPR, CAN-SPAM and PECR, and requirements differ on consent, opt-out and identification. Finding an address is not the same as being permitted to mail it — take your own legal advice.
Is Hunter enough on its own?
Only if you already know which companies to target. Hunter enriches known domains; it does not help you decide which domains to pursue. Teams usually pair it with a list source or their own research.
