Freshdesk Alternatives (2026)
Most people searching this want to spend less. So the useful thing to say first is that the obvious alternative is not cheaper — Zendesk costs exactly the same at the first two tiers. The real saving is somewhere else entirely.
- Freshdesk entry
- $19/agent/mo, no free plan
- Zendesk entry
- $19/agent/mo — identical
- Genuinely free
- Help Scout, 5 users
- First question
- Why are you leaving?
Start with why you are leaving
Helpdesks are expensive to switch and the right alternative depends entirely on the complaint. Three reasons cover almost everyone.
- Too expensive
- Do not move to Zendesk — its first two tiers are priced identically at $19 and $55. Look at tools with a real free tier instead.
- Not capable enough
- Zendesk is the genuine step up, and you should expect to pay for it at the third tier and above.
- The AI billing surprised you
- Worth checking before you move — every major vendor now meters AI separately, just with different models.
The shortlist at a glance
| Tool | Free plan | Entry paid | Move here when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshdesk (for reference) | None | $19/agent/mo | — |
| Help Scout | Yes — 5 users, 1 inbox | $25/user/mo | You are small, cost-sensitive, and want a simpler shared inbox |
| Zendesk | None | $19/agent/mo | You need more capability, not a lower bill |
| Zoho Desk | Yes — 3 agents | See vendor | You already use Zoho, or want a free tier with more structure |
Freshdesk, Zendesk and Help Scout figures read from their own pricing pages on 15 September 2026. Freshdesk and Zendesk prices are annual-billing rates per agent; Help Scout’s are monthly rates, with a 16% annual discount advertised. Zoho Desk prices are shown in local currency depending on your region, so we have not quoted a dollar figure we cannot verify — check their pricing page directly.
If the reason is cost
This is where the search usually starts, and where most comparison pages mislead by listing Zendesk first.
Zendesk will not save you money at the bottom. Freshdesk Growth is $19 per agent per month; Zendesk Support Team is $19. Freshdesk Pro is $55; Zendesk Suite Team is $55. Identical. Moving between them for cost reasons means paying a large migration bill to arrive at the same invoice.
Help Scout is the real cost answer, and specifically its free plan: 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 docs site, permanently. For a small team that is a genuine operating tier rather than a trial. Its paid plans start higher than Freshdesk at $25 per user, so the saving is concentrated entirely at the bottom — if you have more than 5 agents, Help Scout is more expensive, not less.
Zoho Desk also runs a free forever edition with 3 agents. It suits you particularly if you are already inside the Zoho ecosystem, where the integration cost drops to nothing.
So the honest summary for the cost-driven searcher: if you have five agents or fewer, a free tier exists and it will genuinely save you money. If you have more than that, switching helpdesk to cut cost rarely pays for the disruption.
If the reason is capability
Different question, different answer. Zendesk is the standard step up, with a deeper marketplace, more sophisticated routing and an upper tier Freshdesk does not publish an equivalent to. That capability is priced accordingly: Zendesk Suite Professional is $115 per agent against Freshdesk Enterprise at $89, a 30% premium, with a quote-only tier above it.
Before you move, be specific about the capability you are missing. “Zendesk is more powerful” is not a migration plan. “We need skills-based routing and our CRM only has a Zendesk app” is.

The cost nobody quotes
Every page like this compares subscription prices. Almost none mention that switching helpdesk is among the more painful software migrations a support team can undertake:
- Ticket history has to move, or be archived somewhere searchable
- Macros, canned replies and automations are rebuilt, not exported
- Knowledge base articles need migrating and their URLs redirecting
- Integrations get reconnected and retested
- Agents lose fluency for weeks while they relearn the interface
Price that honestly against your projected saving. A five-agent team moving to save $20 a month is spending a fortnight of disruption to recover $1,200 a year, and that maths often does not work.
What is not on this list
Intercom, Front, Gorgias, HubSpot Service Hub and Crisp all belong in a complete survey of this category. We have not reviewed them, so we have not ranked them or quoted their prices from memory.
That is a deliberate limit. A list that ranks tools its author has not assessed is guessing, and this site exists on the premise that we say so when we do not know.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free alternative to Freshdesk?
Help Scout, if your team is five people or fewer — its free plan covers 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 docs site permanently. Zoho Desk offers a free forever edition with 3 agents. Freshdesk itself has no free tier, only a 14-day trial.
Is Zendesk cheaper than Freshdesk?
No. They are identical at the first two tiers, $19 and $55 per agent per month on annual billing. Zendesk is more expensive at the third tier, $115 against $89. Switching to Zendesk to save money does not work.
Will I lose my ticket history if I switch?
Not necessarily, but it is work. Most vendors offer import tooling of varying quality, and some history is usually lost or flattened in transit. Plan for it explicitly rather than discovering it during the move.
Do the cheaper tools also charge extra for AI?
Broadly yes, with different models. Help Scout charges $0.75 per AI resolution; Freshdesk meters AI sessions and sells a Copilot seat separately; Zendesk bills per automated resolution. Whichever you choose, budget AI as a line of its own rather than assuming it is included.
How we compiled this
Prices were read from each vendor’s own pricing page on 15 September 2026 and are published as dated snapshots. Where a vendor shows regionally localised pricing we have not converted or guessed a dollar figure. We have only given detailed assessments of tools we have reviewed, and we say plainly which ones we have not.
