Quick verdict

Deel solves a genuinely hard problem: employing or paying someone in a country where you have no legal entity. It covers a very wide country list and handles the contracts, tax forms and payments that would otherwise require local counsel. Cost per head is the trade-off, and employer of record pricing is materially higher than simple contractor payments.

Choose it if
You are hiring internationally and do not want to establish local entities or manage cross-border compliance yourself.
Skip it if
Your whole team sits in one country where you already have an entity — domestic payroll providers are far cheaper.

What Deel does

Deel operates across three distinct models. Contractor management handles compliant agreements, invoicing and payment in many currencies. Employer of record lets you employ someone through Deel\u2019s local entity where you have none. Global payroll runs payroll in countries where you do have entities.

The compliance layer is the product. Localised contract templates, worker classification guidance, tax form collection and statutory benefit handling are the things that would otherwise require a local advisor per country.

A free HR tier covers basic people management for small teams, functioning as an entry point into the paid payment products.

Core capabilities

  • Contractor management with localised compliant agreements
  • Employer of record employment in a wide range of countries
  • Global payroll for entities you already own
  • Multi-currency payments with several withdrawal methods
  • Worker classification guidance and misclassification protection
  • Tax form collection including W-8/W-9 and local equivalents
  • Free HR tier with org chart, time off and onboarding
  • Integrations with common accounting and HRIS systems

Who it suits

Deel suits distributed startups and scale-ups hiring across multiple countries, where establishing entities is disproportionate to headcount.

It suits companies converting contractors to employees in countries where misclassification risk is significant.

It is unnecessary overhead for a business whose staff are all in one country with an existing payroll provider.

How pricing works

Deel prices per worker per month, with contractor management substantially cheaper than employer of record employment. EOR pricing varies by country because it reflects local statutory costs, and quotes are usually country-specific rather than a single global rate. Global payroll is quoted separately. A free HR tier exists for basic people management. Expect additional costs for statutory benefits, severance accruals and country-specific deposits under EOR — the headline per-employee figure is rarely the full cost.

We do not publish specific figures. SaaS pricing changes frequently and varies by region, contract length and seat count. For current rates, check the vendor’s own pricing page: Deel pricing.

Trade-offs

Drawn from vendor documentation and recurring themes in public user feedback on G2, Capterra and Trustpilot. These are editorial observations, not our own usage claims.

Strengths

  • Very broad country coverage for both contractors and EOR employment
  • Removes the need for local entities and local legal counsel
  • Localised compliant contracts generated automatically
  • Multiple withdrawal options suit workers in different regions
  • Free HR tier is useful for small teams before they need payments

Limitations

  • EOR cost per employee is high relative to direct employment
  • Statutory extras and deposits mean headline pricing understates total cost
  • Support responsiveness is a recurring theme in public feedback at scale
  • Some country coverage is via partners rather than owned entities
  • Overkill and expensive for single-country teams

Alternatives to consider

AlternativeConsider it when
SurePayrollYour team is entirely US-based and you need simple domestic payroll
Buddy PunchYou need time tracking and scheduling rather than employment infrastructure
CognismYour compliance concern is data rather than employment

Frequently asked questions

What is an employer of record?

A company that legally employs someone on your behalf in a country where you have no entity. Deel becomes the legal employer for compliance purposes while the person works for you day to day.

Is Deel cheaper than opening an entity?

Below roughly five employees in a country, usually yes. Above that, establishing a local entity often becomes cheaper, though it adds administrative burden. The crossover depends heavily on the country.

Does Deel handle contractor misclassification risk?

It provides classification guidance and offers protection provisions, but classification is ultimately determined by the working relationship and local law. It reduces risk rather than eliminating it.

Can workers be paid in local currency?

Yes. Deel supports payment in many currencies with several withdrawal methods, which is one of the main practical advantages for distributed teams.
