Vulnerability management and exposure monitoring for IT and security teams.
An enterprise vulnerability management and exposure platform built around the widely deployed Nessus scanner.
Read the review →A scanner finds problems; it does not fix them
Vulnerability scanning is bought on the assumption that the scanner is the hard part. It is not. Running a scan is straightforward; the work is triaging what comes back and having the capacity to remediate it. A scanner pointed at an estate nobody has time to patch produces a report that documents your exposure without reducing it.
That is the first question to settle, before comparing products: who will read the findings, and who will fix them? If the honest answer is nobody, buying a scanner is not the next step.
The second question is scale. Vulnerability tooling sells at two very different levels — a standalone scanner with a published price, and an enterprise exposure-management platform that is quoted. Knowing which one you are shopping in saves a great deal of time.
| Tool | Best for | How it bills | Free option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tenable | IT and security teams managing vulnerability programmes | Nessus Pro $4,790/yr; wider platform quoted | Nessus Essentials — 30-day licence, 5 IPs, non-commercial |
Checked against the vendor’s own pages on 22 September 2026. Nessus Expert, which adds external attack surface and cloud infrastructure scanning, is $6,790 a year. The wider Tenable platform is quoted rather than published, and “quoted” is the accurate answer rather than a number invented to fill a table.
How to approach the decision
Start with capacity, not features. Estimate how many findings a scan of your estate will produce and who will work through them each week. That number sets what you should buy far more than any feature comparison does.
Know which product line you need. The standalone scanner has published prices and suits a team scanning a defined estate. The exposure-management platform is quoted, sold on estate size, and aimed at organisations running a programme rather than a periodic scan. Asking for a platform quote when you need a scanner wastes weeks.
Use the free licence for what it is. Nessus Essentials covers five IPs for thirty days, non-commercial. That is a home lab and a learning tool, not a way to scan a business. For scanning a business the entry point is Nessus Professional at $4,790 a year — useful to know before a trial sets the wrong expectation.
The full assessment, including where Tenable suits enterprise over small teams, is in the Tenable review.
Common questions
Do we need staff to run a scanner?
Yes. A scanner produces findings; it does not remediate them. Without the capacity to triage and fix, you are buying a report that documents risk rather than reducing it. Budget for the time as well as the licence.
Is the free version enough for a small business?
No. Nessus Essentials is limited to five IPs on a thirty-day licence and is non-commercial, which makes it a learning and home-lab tool. Any business estate exceeds those limits immediately.
Why is only one tool listed here?
Because we publish what we have reviewed properly rather than padding a category to look complete. One reviewed tool is a short list and an honest one — our methodology explains the standard each review has to meet.
How to compare tools in this category
Every review in this category follows the same structure, so you can compare like with like rather than reading around each vendor’s marketing. Each page states who the tool suits, who should skip it, how pricing is structured, and what the recurring limitations are.
We do not rank tools against each other with a single score. Software fit depends on your team size, budget, region and existing stack, and a numeric ranking would hide those variables rather than help you. Instead, read the Choose it if and Skip it if lines on each review — they are written to disqualify as often as they recommend.
Prices are described structurally rather than as figures, because SaaS pricing changes frequently and varies by region and contract. Every review links to the vendor’s own pricing page for current rates.
